A Groovy Cherry Bowl

Today's project shows how you can turn a simple piece of wood into an a beautifully shaped bowl! It's the perfect woodturning project for turners of all levels.

I started with a round cherry bowl blank that is 6" wide and 4" tall. Last year, I made a video where I turned a similar blank to this one. https://youtu.be/8GA_mkrVOJc I wanted to do something different with this blank and since I've been in an experimenting mood lately, I thought this was the perfect project to do just that.

I started by trueing up the blank and then slowly turning the shape from wide at the top to narrow at the bottom. Then, I need to mark the peaks, I mean valleys....no peaks. To state that a bit differently, I couldn't decide where the waves should start so that the top and bottom curved inward. I created lines at 1 inch intervals. Using the parting tool, I cut grooves to the depth that I thought would look good. Then I started making the curves of the peaks with smooth transitions to the valleys. Once I was satisfied with the shape, I finished the outside by sanding from 80 to 600 grit, applying Mylands sanding sealer, Ack's abrasive paste, and Ack's polishing paste.

Next, I turned the bowl around in my Nova chuck. I used the bowl gouge to hollow the inside and followed that up with scrapers to get the smoothest finish possible. Then all that was left was to repeat the finishing process I did on the outside and boom....I have a finished bowl.

I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!
