Resin & Mesquite Pencil Cup

What do you keep you pencils and pens in? Junk drawer, all over the counter or desk, some random cup, or a fancy store bought pencil cup. We have a bunch of pencils and pen in a souvenir cup from some random event. My wife requested that I make her something to upgrade our pen and pencil storage.

I had a chunk of mesquite that I was given. It was an odd shape piece of wood. It was too small for a bowl and too pen for a pen. I was looking for the end product to be about 4ish inches tall and a little over 3 inches round. This piece of mesquite was a little short so I needed a way to add some height. I thought I could fix this height issue with some resin. Since I was adding resin, I thought adding a ring would even things out. What would be the easiest way to do that. I came up with several different ways, but each one had its challenges. I decided to drill a hole most of the way down the center. I needed that anyways for the worm screw. Then I drill a 1/2" hole all the way through the side where I wanted the resin ring. Now I just needed to mount it to the lathe and true up the roundness and then with a parting tool, I made a 1/4" deep channel 1/2" wide. I wrapped the piece in packing tape and filled it up with resin. I didn't know if it was going to work when I put it in the pressure pot, but to my surprise, it worked! I was so excited that I didn't have a bunch of resin in my pressure pot where I didn't want it. Then I trued up the sides again and hollowed out the inside.

This was a really fun project and if I'm being honest, most of the excitement came from not knowing if it would work or not. I love experimenting and learning with these projects. I hope you do too!
